This theme was so fun for me! I think the 90s had a wild mix of fun songs!
TARA –-No More I Love You’s-– Another person going for the crazy look! I love it! Great sound. You're always a pleasure to watch and listen to. Loved your dancing in the beginning! Always a pleasure listening to you. I appreciate your effort into your performances even though its a slower song. You should be so proud! Well done! (PS I need to see unhinged Tara MORE!) Always whimsical, great costume. Wonderfully dramatic. Did I just witness a unicorn? –-Creep-– I like that you did the Shimmy body roll while singing this song. One of my favourites from 1990-99! Thank you! Your costume change was great (love the wig!). Your stage presence was INCREDIBLE and your voice here was seriously incredible. Nice job making the song your own. Fun to watch.
DAWSON – Basket Case– Oh wow you really got into it! Looked full on crazy! I hope you didn’t hurt your voice with the growly singing. Love the song! Performance of being crazy was very well done. Keep in mind your volume. Try pulling back from the mic a little more . Your energy was electrifying. Good job! Great voice, great acting skills. Keep performing! But also get some rest. -–Chattahoochee–- So weird seeing you do country by choice. Well done though. Super interesting to see and hear you do country. Great choice and loved the outfit change. Your tone control was also much better here. Yee-haw! You knew the song well, good charisma. Nice outro dance moves... oh and the glass broke.
MARIA –-Spiderwebs-– GREAT COSTUME!!! Great spiderwebs! Couple of squirrelly notes in the top end, maybe from jumping around or maybe you needed to bring the key down a touch. Great Gwen Stefani outfit! The spiderweb prop was so fun and your "spider" was great. Very great use of the stage. Your energy was magnetic and perfect! Well done still being able to sing while jumping. Try to be mindful of where the mic is in relation to your mouth. Excellent! Nailed the costume. Clever to wear the webs. You're a natural performer, would just like to see you look at the screen less. You seemed to know the song! Fun. –-Hitchin A Ride–- This is the stuff i listened to in high school. Great scream. Good tone. Great energy! I LOVE your energy so much. The outfit again is very 90s. Perfect. Try to hold the mic more in the middle vs up by the head. THAT SCREAM! Yes! Well done!! Another great costume, great energy.
JASPER –-Sex & Candy-– Mr Big is actually my favourite chocolate bar! Great show! We lost you a few times on the volume when you were fighting with your chocolate bars. WOW. Can honestly say I wasn't expecting the sex & CANDY in your pants. Twice. Lol! Thank you for making me laugh. I've never liked that song more! That was a happy surprise. Oh my God, another surprise. Way to bribe the judges with candy...! –-Voodoo-– OOh those LOWS! That is the best component of the song and you got it!!! And more candy? Simple & impactful props. Very sexy. Love listening to your deeper register. Nicely done! (candy does work as bribes near Halloween... how did you know?) Nice performance and props. Lost your breath a bit but still sounded good. Yay more candy!
RIKKI –-Brian Wilson-– BNL is so good for your voice. Creative visuals. Singing through the blanket malfunction is seriously commendable. Great hold on your notes and loved the chair surfing and nods to the judge table. Standing bed was clever. Well done! Looks like you had fun singing this song. Nice voice. You made singing look fun! –-To The Moon And Back-– Cute visuals. Well done. Very great use of props during your intro instead of standing around waiting. Also really LOVE the new outfit. Excellent advanced planning with your props that was awesome. Excellent expression too. Very well done! Creative intro. Super throwback, loved the props and costumes and voice.
BRYDEN –-Because We Want To-– Great crowd participation! You sounded great! You dressed like high school me but with evolved makeup skills. Great 90s fit and getting the crowd into it. Also loved that you walked around knowing you didn't have a lot in the way of props. Just saying what's on my mind because I want to ;) (Fade out was also cute). Awesome getting the crowd involved. You're fun to watch, great movement. --Girlfriend-– You do great with Billie Piper songs. Very great choice for your voice. Again would have loved more of a performance. Well done! This song had a very 90s feel, great delivery.
JASMINE –-Hopelessly Devoted To You-– Beautiful! You really sold it with your show too! Very brave being barefoot in the bar. Great vocals! Beautiful dress & use of a prop. The love note was cute. I discovered this song in the 90s, I liked your version, you have a powerful voice. –-Pony-– Wow! That had to be the most entertaining show of the night! You were right into it! And didn’t miss a beat. The shirt tugs killed me! lol. YES! THE DANCE! Is it hot in here?? Ow ow. Amazing performance & inclusion of the audience. A little out of breath by the end but I'm questioning my sexuality. Thank you? Bonus points for doing that intro twice. Nice costume and attitude. Your friend was very scared of you. Great commitment to the role.
MELODY –-I’ll Be-– I love this song. Love it more when I can dance with my hubby to it, lol. Always a pleasure listening to you sing. A little pitchy in the beginning and you got it into the chorus. Would have loved to see more of a performance (like I know you can even with slower songs). Great hold on that long note! Well done! Lots of confidence in your delivery. Kept me engaged. –-Squeeze Toy-– Please leave those type of toys at home! Lost a couple of lines. Love the pigtails. Great tone and perfect outfit (pretend bare feet and all!) The vibrator made me laugh... hope it's not recently played with LOL! Good job! I forgot about this song! Serious commitment bringing your vibrator. Bold move but I'm here for it.
JAMES --Kiss from a rose-– Beautiful tone. You poured a lot of emotion into it. Always a pleasure listening to you. Those high notes!! Would have loved to see a prop or more in your performance. Nicely sung! Emotion in your voice ON POINT. Loved seeing you get lost in the enjoyment of the song. Lovely vocals. I'd love some eye contact swoon. –-Hard To Handle–- Great stage attitude, couple minor phrasing blips. The emotion and conviction you had was amazing! Your stage presence was more demanding with this song which I love. Well done. You got some groove, this song suited your voice well.
SYDNEY –-Linger-– Sorry we didn’t seem to have the song you were looking for. Well done, though. Love the 90s fit (intentional or not). Your voice is great. Would have loved to see more of a performance and preparation like I'm used to seeing from you. Good job! Wow, such a sweet voice. I would've swooned had you given eye contact. You could record this cover, I'd listen. –-Wannabe–- Great energy! Got the crowd singing along. What I really really wanted was to hear this song tonight. Thank you! You had the whole bar singing with you which was awesome. Would have loved to see a different outfit but your energy was fantastic. Fun song for you, always nice to watch you perform.
TIA –-Personal Jesus-– I loved the cash grab at the start! Great schtick! Sounded good too! Great job! The return of the SPARKLES! Love the way you addressed the crowd even if you missed the first line cue. Stage presence was FANTASTIC! Love watching you PERFORM. Great job! Funny intro, loved the costume, nailed the outro. –-Dope Show-– You commanded attention, great stage presence. Can’t comment too much to the sound as i don’t really know this song. But i liked it. Love your outfit & commitment to your performances. I might have liked to see more to your performance, and your timing was slightly off. Loved your interaction with the judges table. Thank you! You can give me a quality deranged performance. More Manson covers please.
ROBYN –Thank you– Beautiful voice! And it really looked like you were feeling it. Welcome to league! I think you will fit in well. Respect rookie courage! Great song choice and love your voice! Emotion while singing was amazing. 90s fit on point. Try to come up with more to do during your breaks. Trust your voice because its great! Well done! Nice tone in your voice, looking forward to hearing more songs from you. –-I Try-– i like the way you make the song your own. Perfect for your vocal style and you came out of your shell more here. You should be proud! A little more practice ahead of time and you'll nail it. Good job! You seemed more comfortable with this song. Macy suits your voice nicely!
DENIS –-Selling The Drama-– I didn’t know this song but now i want to listen to it. Sounds good to me. Good 90s getup too! Amazing vocal performance! I'm so used to you going over the top with costumes and props that I was a tad disappointed to see neither. Good job! You looked like you were having fun, would've loved a prop or something, to keep the engagement. –-Saturday Night-– I liked this. You sounded great. Love the slight change in your attire. Very 90s. Your voice was great here. Well done! This song suited your voice well, best eye contact of the night!
LENORE –-Push-– Love the sparkly jacket. This is a good song for your voice. Only pointer is don’t crack when people compliment you during your song! LOVE THE SPARKLES! Your timing was good here and your pitch is great for this song. I respect not wanting to perform too much. You could have totally asked others to push each other around behind you even. Great job! Nice work, could tell you were really getting into it by the end of the song. –-3AM-– How do you sing Rob Thomas so well? I guess you both have a smooth voice. I like it! Another great one for your voice. Even if you miss a line, just keep going! You got this! Sparkled make everything ok! Good projection of your voice. You missed some parts but the parts you sang sounded great. Trust your voice its lovely.
Thanks again to Bekka Pister and Amanda Kondra for judging tonight!
This was fun night with diverse musical tastes. I loved that. We had a few screamers. Lets all be more mindful of mic distance because I can only do so much. But you all were very entertaining tonight.
DAWSON --Monkey Wrench-- Fun song, I have NO IDEA how you don’t DESTROY your voice when you sing like this. --Dust On The Bottle-- TWO country songs in one week? You actually do it well. Nice growls.
MORGAN --I Will Always Love You-- Ambitious choice. Some voice cracks, but beautiful tone throughout. --Zombie-- Well that was emotionally charged. Great emotion. Sounded good.
TRACEY --Come On Over-- Good song and visual presentation. Great notes, fun performance. --I Turn To You-- Diva energy! Great job!
DARLA --Crazy-- So cool! Someone even threw a bra at Steven Tyler! Cool scarves. Nice belting. --Hard To Handle-- This song can be tricky because it always jumps straight into the verse after a chorus. But your attitude was right on.
COLTEN --Fuel-- It’s been a while since i heard you do the growly thing. Cool costume and stage presence! This was great! --Semi-Charmed Life-- You came alive tonight. Atta boy! That's the performing we’ve been waiting for.
MELISSA --Happy Girl-- Love the happy girls up there with you. --Just A Girl-- Some little phrasing things, a few more listens could have made this a bigger banger.
JAIME --Say My Name-- You have great stage presence without props or anything. Great job with this. Rap is difficult. Great performance. --Don’t Wanna Let You Go-- Vocally i liked this song more. I also enjoyed you walking around with it.
SHIMMY --It’s Like That-- Damn, you stole ALL of Ray-Gun’s moves! Did anyone tell you you could compete for Australia in the Olympics? --Baby One More Time-- Well that was something spicy. Oh Lord there are two shameless men in the bar tonight!
BRIGIT --Caroline-- Beautiful. I love the passion you put in your vocals. --Smells Like Teen Spirit-- Way more performative. Killed it! Great energy! You triggered a mosh pit with all of the right energy!
SARA --Malibu-- Great job. We had some technical difficulties with the sound at that time. Nice strong projection. Nice props. --Unskinny Bop-- You rocked the cool rockstar persona. And sounded fantastic.
CELICA --I Want It That Way-- “Chills. Literal chills.” Good for a last minute swap in. Nice tone --Chattahoochee-- Good job, great backup dancer. Nice country sound & dance.
TAYLOR --Creep-- Couple of voice cracks, but nice tone and good emotion in your voice. Please hold the mic closer. Sweet melodic voice. --Karma Police-- Please hold the mic closer. Your voice is very soft so its hard to hear you sometimes.
LIN --Give Me One Reason-- I’m thrilled to see you tonight. Good job too! --Unwell-- Way to push through the emotions. So raw and beautiful.
CALBERT --Sweat (A La La La Long)-- Good song, well sung. Would like to see you start dancing a little bit to get into the song. Feel the groove. --I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing-- Great use of the mic sand to look like Steven Tyler. You even had dancers.
CLAIRE --Believe-- Fun song, some timing and pitch issues tonight. --Break Me Shake Me-- Great job. I know you know this song well, and it shows.
ASHLEY --Nothing Compares 2 U-- Some of the notes were not quite hit, but you knew the song well. All of the little inflections you had it nailed. Bit of screen watching. --Show Me Love-- Would love to see your confidence grow, you know your songs well.
DAVID --Wonderwall-- A little bit off for a good portion of the song, some phrasing issues. Tech issues. --What I Got-- Some pitch issues, but a playful song which is always good.
BRUCE --Losing My Religion-- Timing issues, pitch and tone were good. --A Girl Like You-- I've heard you do this one well before. Tonight the timing was off, as was phrasing and such. I know you know this song. Maybe don't watch the screen and see if that helps.
Thank you again to Krista Anderson and James Cooper for judging tonight.
Great fun tonight! Difficulties with changing just some colours on the notes. So I separated the comments with double slashes. There are probably typos but I figure you guys waited long enough for your comments.
AMANDA --Fade Into You-- Beautiful and understated. // Perfect 90s vibe, nice use of your partner to fill the instrumental, that’s never easy to do! --Across The Universe-- Beautiful vocals, you only cracked when you seemed to not trust your hubby to carry you around, lol. But great performance. // Such a good job! You know that song well and it shows. Good job using your teammates as props.
BEKKA --Creep-- Great take on this song. Sounded great and I liked your supporting actress. // More cute than creepy.Using Danyal as a prop was smart. She matched your campiness. A little pitchy start, maybe try raising it by ½. // Excellent performance. That little girl was terrified! --Basket Case-- Great job! I liked it. // Very cute! You’re so campy! Never change.
ASHLEY --Foolish Games-- Beautiful voice, fun games idea. // Just like Nicole, it’s hard to get momentum when the bar is loud but you were louder! Was excited for games night. --Strawberry Wine-- Beautiful job. Good use of subtle props. // Uh, that was raspberry wine. Kidding! You did so well.
KODY -Basket Case- Good job you nut. // Good performance, sounds good.--Believe-- This is the first time I've seen a guy do well for Cher. Almost sounded like the autotune was in there. // That got very “tiptoe through the tulips” very fast.
SHAUNA --Kiss From A Rose-- Nice look and sound. I’ve never seen so many flower girls at once. I loved the fan for the dramatic effect. // I vote for you to play batman next in the movie! Also, your wind-ography was great!--Baby Baby-- You captured the sweetheart essence of Amy Grant in your look and sound. I was sure if you were losing your breath or afraid to really go for it at times. Beautiful voice regardless. // Good song choice, very cute 90s look.
JAIME --Keep On Moving-- Great 90s look, great song. I’m not Surprised as this is your era. // Good energy! Nice to have backup dancers. --It’s Gotta Be You-- This is definitely your element. How many times did you vote on this theme? Lol. // This song would be a perfect finals song with some polish, backup dancers, it would be so good. Wireless mic too!
MELODY --Break Me Shake Me-- The breaths in the chorus threw the timing of the song and made you rush part of it. Pitch was good. Glowsticks were fun. // Nice props! I’ve heard you do this song, tonight was tops! --Let’s Get Loud-- This is still my favourite of your songs. // This song would be so good with some camp, or overeating. Think cruise ship performance camp!
DAVI --Friday I’m In Love-- Love that you’re incorporating props. Entertaining. // Cute props, good song for your voice. --Wonderwall-- Well sung, it’s hard to really perform this one. I do like that you look comfortable up there. Another good song choice, try adding a prop or move around a bit to make the performance more dynamic. That wall said “thanks”.
DANYAL --Squeeze Toy-- Loved this. Thanks for keeping it innocent. Lol. // Nice tub, you sounded pretty good, just a few off parts. // Yes, i hate this song. However, you nailed it! Loved the duckies and bathtub and bubbles! Well done :) --Joey-- Someone took this song literally with the kangaroo thing. // You seemed to have trouble hitting the low notes, but the rest sounds ok, maybe raise it a semitone? Also work on mic control for those big notes.
CAT --Waiting For Tonight-- I’d love to see you do this song with your guts pushing in it, like when you do white rabbit. Great outfit too! // You have the voice, time to start incorporating some J-Lo dance moves. Or recruit Shimmy. --Little Bird-- Great sound for this song. Atta girl! // Beautiful voice, great song choice <3
SHIMMY --It’s Like That-- Nice work Ray-Gun. You missed a couple of words, but overall this was done well. // I’m glad the only break in your dancing was the cardboard and not you! --Dig Up Her Bones-- // I want you to sing this at my funeral. K?
NICOLE --Don’t Speak-- Bit of timing struggles, great pitch, great costume. // Good song for your voice, it’s hard to pump energy into a slower song and it was so loud in the bar. Try to match your body language to the emotion of the song. --Mother Mother-- You sound fantastic. Thanks for not screaming in the mic on those parts. You sold it though. // Good song choice, try being more angry, we still believe “everything’s fine”.
KEALY --Say You’ll Be There-- A couple of lines sacrificed to performance, but sounded pretty good. I’d like to see you give it more gut power into your vocals. // Could hear you loud and clear tonight! Easy to tell you’ve listened to this song once or twice. Also great to see your #1 fan out. --You Drive Me Crazy-- // The 90s are your decade girl!
KRISTA --Baby One More time--You had some timing struggles, great costume and stage presence. // Cute outfit. You seem to have lost the timing a few times, what i do is close my eyes, cause if you know the song your brain ill fill it in. --Stop-- // Good energy, nice sign. You seemed to stumble on a few lyrics, but nothing some practice won’t fix. If you’re getting tripped up, close your eyes or look away from the tv and let your brain fill it in!
ROCHELLE --Black Number One (Little Miss Scare-All)-- // You did well, but that version is not it, we’ll have to look for another one. --Forty Six & Two-- I don’t know the song, don’t like the words but lose the sound and tone you used for it. // Try incorporating a prop or a person prop to help make your song more dynamic.
Thank you again to Tia Fehr and Lenore Cooke for judging.
